Sustainability on board

We must drastically change the airline industry to make aviation more sustainable. We're constantly working on these changes. Small changes also contribute to achieving our goal. Changing our onboard experience is 1 of these small changes.

What we do

We’re making small changes to our onboard experience, such as reducing the weight of onboard items, making conscious meal choices and trying to recycle as much as possible.

Reducing weight

If a plane weighs less, it consumes less fuel. The result? Fewer CO₂-emissions are produced. We reduce our emissions by decreasing the weight of our seats, trolleys, and other items we bring on board.

The changes may be small, but they have some effect: on average, a three-hour flight produces 31.045 kg CO₂. A weight reduction of 1000 kg saves us 275 kg CO₂. We’re improving our efforts constantly; every kilo counts.

Conscious meal choices

Every year, we serve around 40 million meals on board of our flights. We try to think about environmental impact when selecting our meals.

Recycling

By 2030, we aim to consistently produce 50% less residual waste than in 2011. In 2021 we achieved this percentage, but we realise this was because we had fewer flights due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This means we have yet to reach our goal.

We’re working hard to further reduce our waste production. Most of this waste is made on board of our flights: we’ve highlighted 3 of our recycling projects of onboard products.

Challenging rules and regulations

It’s challenging to improve the sustainability of our industry. For some destinations, strict recycling rules and regulations prevent us from recycling as much as we want. We work hard to ensure these rules and regulations are changed. Once this happens, we hope to recycle more waste.

What you can do

As an airline, it’s our responsibility to contribute towards making the aviation industry more sustainable. But there are small things you can do to contribute.
